Caring for your Ceramic Art

Ceramics bring beauty, warmth, and personality into any space, whether it’s a handcrafted mug, decorative vase, or everyday dinnerware. With the right care, your ceramic pieces can stay in excellent condition for years to come. Here are some simple tips to help you care for your ceramics properly.

First, always handle ceramics with care. While ceramics are durable, they can chip or crack if dropped or knocked against hard surfaces. When stacking plates or bowls, place a soft cloth or paper towel between them to prevent scratches and chips.

Cleaning your ceramics correctly is also important. Most glazed ceramics can be washed with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge. Avoid using abrasive scrubbers or harsh cleaning products, as these can damage the glaze or leave scratches. For delicate or hand-painted pieces, hand washing is always the safest option, even if the item is labelled dishwasher-safe.

Temperature changes can affect ceramics more than many people realise. Avoid exposing pieces to sudden extreme temperature shifts, such as moving a dish directly from the freezer to a hot oven. Rapid changes can cause cracking due to thermal shock. If your ceramic item is oven-safe, allow it to warm gradually.

For decorative ceramics, dust regularly using a soft cloth or microfiber duster. Display valuable or sentimental pieces in stable areas where they are less likely to be bumped or knocked over.

If you notice small stains inside mugs or vases, a paste made from baking soda and water can help gently lift marks without damaging the surface.

Caring for your ceramics doesn’t have to be complicated. With gentle handling, proper cleaning, and mindful storage, your favourite ceramic pieces can remain both functional and beautiful for many years.
